Summer
Rayne Oakes is
a model and social entrepreneur based in New York City. In August
2004, Oakes moved to New York City from Upstate New York after college
to pursue her modeling, social and environmental pursuits. Since
that time, Oakes has combined her image and expertise within the
fashion and environmental industries to bring about socially responsible
change and awareness.
A
Cornell University
graduate, Morris
K. Udall Scholar and NWF
Fellow, Oakes' previous work spanned multiple disciplines, all
which was deeply imbued in environmental research. Her studies in
organic contaminants & environmental health, rainforest regeneration,
invasive species, and aquatic entomology overlapped with her "modeling
with a cause." Because of that, she has become largely known
as "The Eco-model".
Oakes
currently consults
a variety of clientele on market research, sustainable business,
and socio-environmental communications. She travels throughout the
world as an expert, spokesperson
and partner, assisting companies and organizations with events
that seek to tie in style with sustainability. These include: The
Ethical Fashion Show (Paris), Catwalk on the Wild Side (SF), the
Fair Trade Fashion Show held during the World Trade Organization
(WTO) Ministerial (Hong Kong) and the ECO-PETAL Fashion Event (LA),
among others.
As
a United Nations's US Partnership Youth Emissary, Summer Rayne focuses
much of her efforts on sustainability education, and launched "ECOFASHION
101" (a conscious curriculum with style) as a pilot program
with Recyclebank
to help connect children to the issues through traditional subjects.
She has spoken at a variety
of outlets on topics ranging from sustainable style to green
marketing to entrepreneurship.
Through
her company, SRO, Summer Rayne produces
and writes her own eco-fashion editorial entitled, "Behind
the Label" for global fashion magazine, Lucire.
At the end of October, Oakes took over as Acting Editor for the
magazine. In September of 2006, Summer Rayne launched S4,
a fashion industry insider on sustainability, which takes an in-depth,
research-based approach to the latest trends in sustainable style.
Her most recent work, however, is focused on developing
and hosting television programs focused on environmental topics.
She has made various appearances, contributions, and interviews
for a variety of multimedia outlets and is currently the host for
Eco 4 the World, an international prime time show debuting
on teen media channels throughout Asia.
